I was late to wake up, started hiking by 9am, and made the three quick dirt road miles back to the CDT to end the alternate route through Anaconda.
I made my first ten miles sweating quite a bit and there was a very strong wind. It left me cold, but a second layer made me way too hot. I played a game of putting on and pulling off my fleece until lunch. I took a lunch of oatmeal and a salmon packet at a spring trough.

I cruised forests for much of the day, until I got to the opportunity for a low routing alternate that saved a couple miles and some up and down. I took it. Despite probably 100 blowdowns, it was a nice walk and likely more scenic than the CDT due east.
I hiked late into the evening — camp necessitated. The slender, young forests were much too dense, making a tent pitch unsuitable and cowboy camping uncomfortable. I walked until I found camp at 9:50pm.
The trees did not suit a bear hang, but I tried anyway. On my first throw, I managed to get my rock bag stuck in notch of a tree. I yanked the line, and the carabiner separated from the rock bag. That’s a problem for tomorrow morning.
