Today’s racetrack started before 8am. Finally, I hiked some flat miles in Colorado.
🗓️ Date | June 24th |
⇢ Mileage | 20.5 |
📍 Trip Mileage | 1286.9 |
⛅️ Weather | Sunny and fine |
🏞️ Trail Conditions | Downhill for the first few miles; flat trail rolling lakeside most of the day |
I cruised down to Monarch Lake and pushed my way to Granby Lake. I had a short bump over a ridge along the skinny long lake and the rest was flat all the way to Grand Lake. I am on the boundary of Rocky Mountain National Park and briefly entered the park on my walk into town. I am undecided as to whether I will head into the park of shortcut it. Rocky Mountain National Park requires a permit along with a bear can for a 26 mile open-sided loop. Or, I could head north parallel to Highway 34 out of Grand Lake and bypass Rocky Mountain National Park. The permit and bear can give me a headache, but I supposed I am exaggerating.
It was an uneventful, but focused day. I got into town, downed some pizza and ice cream, and resupplied. I visited the gear store and consider my options for the park. I sort of decided to skip the park after talking with the veterans of Never Summer gear shop, but I am reconsidering. I imagine myself trying to get a permit early tomorrow. If I do, I’ll rent a bear can from the gear shop, send my way through the park with maybe one overnight, and hitch back into Grand Lake to return the canister.
I’ll try my hand at a permit tomorrow. Tonight, I am stealth camped outside of town at the border of the national park.
Signing off,
